Northwest Area Transportation Plan - Nome Area Tourism Demand, Potential and Infrastructure Study

The Nome area is attracting new users on its three rural highways. In addition to serving as important infrastructure for village access, mine development, and subsistence activities, the Teller, Kougarok and Council roads are increasingly connecting adventure travelers with scenic tundra and beaches, wildlife, and historical resources.

LDN worked with the Alaska DOT & PF to determine how, and to what degree, the highway system out of Nome can foster tourism industry growth and economic development. Land Design North worked with a team of planners and consultants to evaluate tourism trends and demand, determine the ability of harbor, airport, roads and the business community in Nome to meet identified needs, and make recommendations with respect to appropriate infrastructure improvements.

Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway Designation

LDN worked with Glenn Highway corridor residents to secure the road's designation as a U.S. Scenic Byway. Through our development of graphic handouts, posters and maps, Land Design North supported the effort's Partnership Board and the Alaska DOT & PF as they sought public participation in the nomination process.

We also coordinated public open houses, solicited feedback through questionnaires, and researched and wrote chapters for the nomination documenting the highway's intrinsic resources.

South Extension of the Coastal Trail

As a sub-consultant to the Alaska DOT & PF, LDN has assisted in the conduct of public meetings and workshops designed to identify an acceptable trail route linking Kincaid Park and Potters Marsh. This project has probably generated more controversy over a longer period of time than any other recent project.
