PARK, TRAIL AND RECREATION

Bird Point

LDN provided an environmental approach to quantifying and measuring community concerns in this controversial state park project. LDN used the concept of "Limits of Acceptable Change" (LAC), and the environmental layering technique to identify sensitive lands and demonstrate how Bird Point could be responsibly developed.

Anticipating increased tourist and local pedestrian use, we evaluated how different user groups have used and were currently using the sensitive site. As part of the LAC process, public meetings were conducted to identify important issues and how best to develop the site with the least amount of adverse impact. Integral to the development of the site was the conservation of the unique and sensitive environments visitors come here to experience.

Kincaid Park

LDN has been involved in numerous efforts to plan and design elements of Kincaid Park, a focal point for winter recreation in Anchorage. We created a master plan for roads, water and sewer, grading, drainage, sports fields, ski trails, parking, signage and a visitor center and warm-up chalet.

Work required development of a master trail layout, development of trailheads with visitor information facilities, and reclamation of a former Nike missile site including regrading and revegetation in order to accommodate nordic ski trails. Other projects at Kincaid have included an access road upgrade design study report; layout and design of a paved and lighted loop trail for Kincaid's biathlon course; and most recently, analysis of terrain and trail layouts within Kincaid Park as part of the Tony Knowles Coastal trail south extension proposal.

Valley of the Moon Park

LDN was contracted to replace play equipment at this park site that would meet current accessibility and playground safety standards. This park, once known as "Rocketship Park," was a city landmark. Our solution was a custom-designed piece of playground equipment that reflects that rocketship theme and provides for strong public identification.
